Puting a pencil to your own landscaping plans, you’ll start to notice some beautifully fascinating landscape designs, plans, and ideas. You almost can’t help but wonder how some landscape designers come up with this stuff. Researching for the right plants, creating design shapes, choosing materials, and countless other details are usually too much for the first time do it yourselfer.

More experienced designers may rely on their years of repetition and experience. For many, it’s simply a matter of vision. And other times the planner may have to go through several ideas until they find some that work. Most home owners are part of this last group. Without a clue about landscaping, most folks search through books of pictures of landscaping and yards searching for different ideas and plans that might work well in their own yards.

With as many books and online landscaping pictures to look at, it should be easy to find a design that could at least be copied. It probably would be If every yard was the same shape.  However, the fact is that most yards aren’t the same size or shape. Regardless of all the landscape and garden designs, you still probably won’t find a design that will fit perfectly into your own yard or property.

Being the case for most folks, a different approach to designing a landscape is needed. Don’t try to find a perfect design plan that will magically fit into your yard. When looking through different landscaping photos and ideas, try to identify the things that are alike in most or all of the landscaping ideas. Try to identify what the methods and ideas are that are used over and over by different architects, landscapers, and designers. Since they are almost always simple principles of landscape design and art, these are the design elements that are generally appealing. These are the things that will probably incorporate well into your own design project regardless of shape.

Take a look at the different forms and shapes and how they’re repeated throughout the landscaping. And also pay attention to how plants are placed and how their colors are being used in different gardens. Pay attention to the small details like elements or plants being grouped together in odd numbers. Pay attention to the details of landscaping and not just the shape. Your own ideas will come together as you dig into the mechanics of landscaping and landscape design.

If even your only resource, there’s nothing wrong with using ideas from other designs, books, or even landscaping pictures. You’ll have better luck piecing different ideas from different plans together instead of trying to find the exact perfect design shape for your landscape. Besides saving yourself a lot of frustration, you’re more likely to come up with a design that is creative and unique to your own yard.
