Landscaping Throughout History

Landscaping is the process by which we can visibly alter the world around us. In most cases today though, when we say landscaping, we are referring to the act of planting trees and other plants to change the appearance or our own yard. This is a bit of an oversimplification of the word, when you consider its origins.

In ancient Greece during the beginnings of philosophy, landscaping was an important topic, coming up in the works of such philosophical heavy-hitters as Plato and Aristotle. In the East, landscaping was and still is an important part of spirituality. Achieving balance among the various elements of landscaping – water, rocks, earth, and plants – is a major goal for students of the Eastern religions.

Landscaping As An Art Form

In the more recent past and modern times, even the artistically-minded began to turn their attention toward the burgeoning art form of landscaping. What better canvas to work on than all of outdoors? Imagine the freedom and potential that an artist must feel when he looks out on a parcel of land and begins to decide how he can turn that land into a gigantic artistic masterpiece. As with every medium, there has been much debate over whether beauty should be the chief goal of landscaping. While most people are indeed trying to make something that looks as good as possible, the more avant garde artists have been able to use landscaping to create art that goes beyond mere beauty. By creating a work of art that may be seen as jarring or ugly, they are often making a broader statement about the world than to simply make something look pleasing to the eye.

In Modern Times

Landscaping is as wide-ranging and extensive today as it ever was. From new constructions to remodeling, many people require the services of a trained expert to make their land look its best. Many other people are deciding to forego the trained expert and take the do-it-yourself approach. Either way, it has become a thriving commercial industry, with businesses specializing in both service and products and equipment. From the standpoint of a consumer or a business owner, there is a lot to be excited about.

As you can see, landscaping has a rich and stories history which we have barely touched on here. Whether or not you take the time to look further into the long history of it, you can enjoy it in your own yard, anytime you want!
