A nursery is literally defined as a place where plants of all sorts are sowed and cared for to grow healthily. There are several different types of nurseries available, such as retail nurseries, wholesale nurseries, and private nurseries.
Retail nurseries are those which sell to the public, wholesale nurseries are those which sell to other nurseries and to commercial landscape gardeners only, and private nurseries are those which supply to the needs of institutions or private estates.
The term green house nursery is used because many nurseries grow plants in green houses. They can be growing basically any type of plant, including: annuals, perennials, and woody plants such as trees and shrubs.
What is a Green House Nursery?
A green house nursery is a building that is made of glass or plastic and is designed solely to protect and give proper light and ventilation to plants while they grow. Green houses are especially good for young plants, as they can keep them from harsh weather such as frost, allowing them to grow healthily, which is crucial, especially until they are a little bit older.
Nurseries usually specialize in one specific phase over any other, such as propagation, growing out, or retail sale. A green house nursery is usually run by plant enthusiasts who believe in specializing in a particular group of plants.
There are certain advantages to a green house nursery, such as the fact that a lot of them offer plants that may be hard to find anywhere else. Aspen, for instance, is one such plant. Aspens are trees of the willow family and all aspens typically grow in large colonies which are derived from a single seedling. Each aspen tree usually only lives for about 40-150 years above ground. However, some survive for thousands of years.
The wood of the aspen is white, soft, and fairly strong, and has a very low flammability level. Aspens are distinguished by the nearly round leaves that are found on the mature aspen trees. The European aspen is in fact one of the most widely distributed trees in the world. Many nurseries offer nursery-grown aspen, which means that the nursery propagates aspen from such things as root cuttings or from seeds and then allows them to grow to a saleable size in pots or in the field. It is for such reasons that green house nurseries are essential to a healthy life of many plants.
