There is nothing more frustrating than enjoying gardens but having to live without one. Apartment living may have its advantages – and you certainly don’t need to worry about mowing the lawn – but if you enjoy pottering around with plants you might feel restricted by not having a garden of your own.
Fortunately indoor gardening is perfectly possible; you just need to learn how to make the most of the space you have and to live with the restrictions it places on you.
Plants In Every Room
Many people who enjoy indoor gardening make sure they have at least one plant in every room. If you choose your plants carefully you can create a different and natural aroma in every room of your apartment. Plants can also be very cleansing for the air quality.
Consider the atmosphere in each room before you decide where to position each plant. For instance, bathrooms will have a far more humid atmosphere than any other room in the home, so bear this in mind. Furthermore, although we often go with the idea of placing plants on window sills, this isn’t always the best route to take. Make sure you read up on the likes and dislikes of every plant you like before you buy it.
Don’t overlook the possibility of using dried plants and flowers as part of indoor gardening either. For example, dried lavender looks wonderful when tied together in small bunches, and it is ideal for hanging on bedsteads as it is a very calming plant with a wonderful aroma. It will also last several weeks like this if left undisturbed.
Depending on the size of your home, you could select a specific room to make over as a green room. This is akin to bringing the garden indoors, and works best if the room has a balcony or large window with a window box outside.
Make the room relaxing by using big comfy chairs and cool colors before introducing a variety of plants. Indoor gardening in this way can create a calm oasis for you to relax in at all times of the year.
Indoor gardening can also include growing herbs, which works really well if you clear off the kitchen window sill to accommodate them. You can buy special kits which include everything you need to grow a variety of herbs in an attractively designed pot or trough – check your local garden center for ideas. Not only do they provide a wonderful aroma as they are growing, they love the sun and can be snipped off when needed to add to a wide variety of home cooked dishes.
