There are three aspects to gardening. The first is where your garden is inside your home. The second is to utilize outside space to plant your garden. The third is to do your gardening under glass and this is called greenhouse gardening.

Greenhouse gardening is very similar to outside gardening. You need to be able to control the greenhouse temperature. Keep in mind that plants do much better in temperatures that are a little lower than house temperatures and they need much more humidity. This will be the perfect environment for your greenhouse plants.

You need to build your greenhouse in a spot that maximizes the amount of sun that it can get through the year. This is very important for the spring and fall when the sun is at its lowest point. Locate your greenhouse where the sun will be at a southeastern to southwestern direction.

By spacing your plants regularly around the greenhouse area, it will give better ventilation flow. One good idea for ventilation is open the greenhouse doors in the morning and then close them in the late afternoon. You can even do this in the winter as long as you watch that the weather doesn’t get too cold.

You can also hose down the floor in your greenhouse and open the vents in the ceiling. This will quickly cool down the greenhouse.

Commercial potting soil works well for greenhouse plants. It is preferable to grow the plants in large trays rather than in pots or containers. The best soil mixes include fir bark, sand, peat moss, vermiculite and perlite for some drainage.

As with all types of gardening you must see that your plants receive adequate water. Greenhouse gardening means that care must be taken not to over water your plants. A climate controlled greenhouse regulates the moisture level with the greenhouse.

Planting in a greenhouse means using your imagination. You should have plenty of space so that you can pot new plants and move around seeing to the health of your other plants.

You will need to plant vegetables like carrots, beets, turnips and other root vegetables in a deep box tray which will fit under benches. Lettuce and other low growing leafy vegetables can be planted in tubs with vegetables that have a taller growth. Vegetables like peas, cucumbers and tomatoes do well in tub type containers.

Let you imagination run wild and see what results you can obtain when it comes to greenhouse gardening.

Buying a greenhouse kit can be a major purchase, so you want to make sure you have the right kit that will fit your needs. In this article, I will go through the most important aspects of buying a greenhouse kit and what you should be looking for when deciding what kind of green house kit you need.

How to Choose the Right Sized Greenhouse Kit

This will depend on how much space you have for a greenhouse kit, and what you want to grow in it. If you are just going to be growing herbs in your kit, you can probably go for a smaller size. If you want to grow flowers, you should be looking for a small to medium sized kit. If you want to grow vegetables (depending on what kinds), you probably want a larger kit.

You also want to think about whether you want a kit that will be staying in the same place all of the time, or if you want it to be portable. If you get one made out of wood, it will need a lot more care than one that does not require as much maintenance. Also, what type of covering do you want on your kit? You can choose from tempered glass or polycarbonate.

Green House Kit Prices

Greenhouse kits can range from $50 – $6,000, depending on what size and type you choose. The best part about buying a greenhouse kit is that you can build it yourself so you dont have to pay someone else to build it. You want to make sure you have a large enough greenhouse so that the plants have enough room to grow. So plan ahead on what size would be best for you and your needs.

Green House Kit Reliability

A polycarbonate covering is one of the best coverings to choose from. For the frame, a PVC and metal tubing is the most affordable option. Steel and aluminum is more expensive, but more resilient as well. When it comes to all of the factors of a greenhouse of your choice, including how long it will last, how it looks and the best energy efficiency, a greenhouse kit built from natural cypress is the best choice.

Green House Kit Guarantee

A lot of companies that sell greenhouse kits offer some guarantees that you should look for. One of them is a lowest price guarantee. Usually, with this guarantee, you will find that the company does have the lowest prices available for a greenhouse. However, in this guarantee you should be able to get some of your money back if you find the same greenhouse kit for a lower price somewhere else. This guarantee is usually good for 7 ” 30 days or more.

You should also look for kits that come with some type of warranty that will cover the costs of damage to your greenhouse kit for at least up to one year. Some companies offer a warranty for up to twenty years! You should look for a warranty that includes any damage, breakage, and/or defects.

Have fun searching for the best greenhouse kit that will suit your needs and your budget.

Plant nurseries are getting more popular by the day because many people are becoming more conscious towards adding greenery in and around their houses. A plant nursery does not necessarily mean a huge greenhouse filled with all sorts of new growing plants that needs complete protection all the time.

It can also refer to many contemporary nurseries where people plant their favorite type of plants together in a small house-like building with special ventilation, drainage, watering system and lighting.

However, such nurseries can be very high maintenance at times. When buying the supplies, the plants themselves can be costly as you develop a taste for more exotic varieties. This is the reason why there are many wholesale plant nurseries nationwide, as well as online providing this service.

Wholesale Benefits

It is a known fact that anything in bulk, also known as at a wholesale rate, regardless whether it is plants, seeds, equipment or pots, it works out much cheaper than buying individually.

A wholesale plant nursery is basically just like any nursery, except for that it only sells to other nurseries, regardless of size and commercial capacity. It usually does not sell to individual gardeners who need only small quantities. Besides that a wholesale plant nursery is also very important to landscape gardeners, because this is the place where they can obtain a wholesale supply of beautiful ground-covering plants and accessories.

Sometimes a wholesale plant nursery takes the role of becoming private nurseries which supply the needs of institutions or private estates, or even small nursery owners who own them for hobby purposes.

Some online companies which run a whole plant nursery also provide this service and the range of plants that are offered are just beyond ones imagination. In fact these wholesale nurseries have the most amounts of species of plants, simply because they basically supply to almost every other smaller nurseries out there.

Some of those would include decorative or showy plants, useful or fruit trees, flowering and undergrowth shrubs, ferns, trailing plants, flowering tropical plants and trees, bamboos, reeds, vines, carpet or decorative grasses, groundcover grass and plants, normal grasses and grass-like plants and shrubs, tuberous plants, garden vegetable plants, woody plants, shade plants, rock garden plants and many more.

Most of the plants in a wholesale plant nursery are circulated by seeds, meaning to say that you can directly order the seeds of the plants you want from the nursery rather than the plant itself. Besides that, there also other plants which are propagated asexually by normal nursery techniques such as budding, grafting and layering.

A wholesale green house is a business just like any other, and must make a profit to stay in business. Your love for plants won’t be enough to keep the doors open if you don’t make a profit. The special needs set a wholesale green house, and the way it makes its profit apart from other businesses. You should really consider these needs before starting in on your wholesale green house.

Special Needs of Your Wholesale Green House

These needs do overlap with the considerations for any business, but the wholesale green house has to deal with them in a very special way.

The first consideration for just about any business is location. This can be a particularly tricky problem for the operator of a wholesale green house, as there are some very important things to consider in the site. It would be wonderful to have that great site right in the middle of shopping row, where tens of thousands of cars would drive by daily. The problem in this is that a wholesale green house needs a lot of space. There are all the plants in the long green houses, some sort of office, and a place for all the equipment. Then after all that, you still have to have a place for the customers to park. This can quickly add up to make the central commercial property much too expensive for the green house to operate. At the same time, you don’t want to go so far out, that you have trouble getting the utilities to run your business, so looking around the edge of town is usually the best option.

This leads to a second consideration. You may need to budget for a bit more advertising, or target it better, as people won’t be driving past your store front often enough. You should think about some way of directing your customers to your location, as it may be off the beaten path just a bit.

In location, we mentioned utilities. These are a going concern for any business, but a wholesale green house has to make special considerations. There may be a need for nighttime heaters, extra watering, and grow lights, which will all run the cost of the utilities up.

These problems are not insurmountable, and should not deter you from your wholesale green house. Just consider them, and make special room for them as you plan, and you should do well.

Tropical trees leave us captivated with love of nature. Ranging from ground plants up to tall trees, anything to do with tropical is just so beautiful. And the same goes for a tropical plant nursery as well.

Large trees like coconut or other tropical palms have their own charm, growing so tall and having the greatest tasting fruits and most beautiful flowers. Smaller plants on the other hand, which can be practically planted in any type of tropical plant nursery, also grow lush and bear the most colorful flowers.

Basic Growth – Seeds It all starts from the process of germination, which provides you with control over the range of tropical plants and trees planted at your nursery. If you visit any famous tropical plant nursery around the country, you can see that many of them believe in the tempting potential of those beautiful seeds those tropical trees or plants produce, and try to germinate them; usually finding success. It is always said that whatever plant you choose to have in your tropical plant nursery, start from the fresh seed. And the seeds of tropical plants, especially the larger trees can be collected as soon as it is ripened, or when the fruit is showing some color or in certain cases has fallen freshly from the tree or plants. Indeed fresh seeds produce and guarantee good results.

Some seeds however may pose a threat to our skin and health, such as some royal palms and fishtail palms. Be particularly careful when germinating them as they contain irritants that can aggravate your skin.

Growing Environment

Usually once they have grown, these plants are transferred to clay pots, because clay pots naturally provide better ventilation for proper root development, which is very essential for tropical plants. The highest quality of soil is used, and usually imported from tropical countries such as Myanmar, India, Brazil, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and Thailand.

Dampness is a very important aspect when it comes to having a good tropical plant nursery, because practically all the plants need a very high level of dampness, both in the air as well as the soil. The same conditions apply to the light and moisture as well.

Take care in the early stages of planting your tropical plants, so that you can enjoy their beauty and fruit for several years to come.

If ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ makes sense to you, then so does the idea of setting up one’s own apple tree nursery. A flair of gardening and good health are required, the latter in fact benefiting from the gardening activity itself.

Before starting an apple tree nursery, choose an apple variety like the Espalier that requires less space without compromising healthy growth. By training the arms of the branches horizontally on either side of the stem, you will have a nursery that not only looks good but also saves much space and hence proves more productive.

Buying Espalier Apple for Your Tree Nursery

If you are dying to see your apple trees flower and fruit no later than a year or two, buy partly trained trees from specialists. Alternatively, you can develop a more parent-child relationship with your tree nursery members by purchasing bare-root Espalier trees for planting in winter.

Shaping the Tree Nursery

First of all, choose an open sunny site near a south/west-facing fence. Since the branches of the tree are to be trained, the hole dug for the plant should be near a post as well as near to the fence.

The hole dug should be deep, wide, and forked over at the base so as to break up the subsoil for improving drainage and mixing in well-rotted compost. The hole should be large enough to allow spreading out of the roots.

Before planting the tree, it is important to soak its bare roots in water for some hours. After fixing the plant in the mix, fill in around the roots with compost and fertilizer added to the soil. Let the bulbous graft union at the stem’s baser rest above the soil level.

Water at least two gallons to soak the soil around the plant and settle it down among the plant’s roots. Fill any hole with soil and water once every two weeks to keep the soil moist. To train the tree’s branches, tie them down to support wires that run along the fence. Fix each arm in more than one place using string or wire ties.

As growth proceeds into the following winter, cut the main shoot at the tip by as much as 18 inches above the last tier. Leaving the shoot to grow straight, tie those on the sides to horizontal training wires at the year’s end for the sake of next tier.

Repeat this process with the new branches on each side to prevent them from advancing straight up. At the end of each season, new tiers should be formed. Water regularly till the trees are independent in the uptake of water and nutrients from the soil. Pruning from end July to mid August is recommended.

Just wonderful isn’t it? If the idea appeals to you, then starting a plant nursery in your backyard is something you can consider

If you’re planning to enter or grow in the nursery business, or you just want to start up a plant nursery for the fun of it, there’s practically no need to worry about anything because there are abundant resources online which will guide you throughout the whole process of starting a plant nursery, right from the basics up to the advance stages of maintenance.

Online Guidelines

Many websites online offer links for commercial nursery and green house products – ranging from the seeds and trees to tips and advice in starting a plant nursery. In many cases, they have links to the product manufacturers as well as lists of distributors nationwide.

What can these Websites tell me?

Many of these sites have everything about starting a plant nursery and maintaining one properly. Usually they would help you in selecting the type of nursery that you want to start, selecting the land, irrigation, writing a catalog and pricing the plants if you are selling them. They can even provide pointers in how to strike a balance between a nursery business and your family, tips on handling assistants or employees in commercial cases, as well as marketing your plants if you plan to expand.

They also offer step-by-step guidelines in starting a greenhouse. Some of the included tips would include how to choose your own seeds, which is a very essential basic step in starting a plant nursery. Seed catalogs that offer a seemingly endless variety of flowers, vegetables, and herb seeds are provided for your reference.

Besides that, tips on picking the nursery plant and the selection techniques are also taught. Sometimes links to some nurseries would be available, whereby you can directly visit them to learn the basics in starting a plant nursery; especially the placement of the plants, what type of plants you want, how much space should be divided and distributed, utility checking, soil condition checking and many more.

These useful websites also provide you with advice on how to take care of the plants and watch them for insects such as aphids, spider mites whiteflies and all sorts of diseases.

Some people look at their small property, or small budget, and become discouraged by being limited to a small green house. They may see the large ones at the nursery, and become lost in trying to fit all that into the small space allowed them. This shouldn’t be seen as a limitation, but rather as an opportunity. Not everyone needs the huge, hangar-sized greenhouse, most can be very happy with a small green house, if they know how to work with it. Careful selection, organization, and smart usage are the keys to using a small green house to its full potential.

Getting the Most from Your Small Green House

It all starts with the decision on placement. If you are limited on space, then the part of it you allot to your small green house becomes that much more valuable, so placing it optimally is very important. Be careful as you consider not only the sun you want for your green house, but just where you might want the rest of your garden as well. It wouldn’t do to place it, and then later remember that happened to be just where you wanted to place a focal point for your garden.

Now that you know where you are putting your small green house, it is a good idea to consider just how you want to use it. Many people with a small green house only use it seasonally to winter plants that may not be able to stay on the outside during the cold. This allows them to have plants they might not be able to without the greenhouse.

Once you decide on where and how, it might be good to think for a bit about what. This means looking carefully at the plants you want for your garden, and sorting out which ones might need the green house and which not. With a small green house, this process has to be a bit more involved, as space is at such a premium. Therefore, the plants need to be special plants that you really want to have, but might not be able to have due to your climate zone.

After you have made all the selections, the smaller space will require you to organize carefully. You will most likely not have room in your small green house for storage, so you will have to have some place for your tools and extra pots and so forth arranged. Now you can see that, through careful planning and selection, the size of your green house should not be that great an issue.

While there are many locations available which offer green houses, green house supplies and kits, it can be hard to find places that offer a portable green house for a relatively low price. A portable green house can be incredibly useful, in that it has all of the features of a regular green house, with the added advantage of being able to move with you.

They are also a great alternative for over-wintering plants. Portable green houses do not require any tools for assembly and can be built in less than an hour. You can also disassemble your portable green house easily, and then store it in the garage or basement effortlessly. Use the internet to searching for a portable green house as this will allow you to compare between the many options.

The Best Places to Find an Affordable Portable Green House

ACF Green houses is a popular company which offers a varied selection of portable green houses at particularly low prices. Their space saving green houses provide customers with a relatively inexpensive way to get a jump-start on your growing in the spring as well as to extend it longer in the fall season.

The portable green houses they offer have Solaron covers, which is made of reinforced woven polyethylene which has an 80% light transmission, UV protection, as well as an anti-condensation coating. Their portable green house packages include a door as well as screened in windows for ventilation. They built the doors and windows so that they can be held open with Velcro fasteners when not in use, and as well have built-in screens in order to help keep out animals and insects.

All of their portable green houses include the following: dark green painted frame, one-piece 11 millimeter polyethylene cover, wide zippered openings and screened vents, tote bag for easier transportation and storage, anchoring kit, and a three year warranty.

Their portable green houses are shipped by UPS and can be delivered in as little as two to seven days. They also offer accessories for your portable green houses, including electric heaters, portable benches, and thermometers. The electric heaters offer multiple heat settings, a built-in dial thermostat, and overheat protection.

The portable benches are used for tasks such as potting, repotting, and other messy jobs. The thermometers are used for storing high and low readings for both inside and outside temperatures, and are useful for anyone who enjoys gardening, especially green house gardening.

A plastic green house isn’t very durable or sturdy, so it’s usually not a good choice for a green house. There are times, however, when it’s the perfect choice.

Temporary Situations

One reason to use a plastic green house is in a temporary situation. Perhaps you are renting a place, or you want a temporary green house for now and plan to build something more permanent later. In those instances, a portable plastic green house is a perfect solution. They are inexpensive and they work as well as a more conventional green house; they’re just not very durable.

Short Growing Seasons

A portable plastic green house is a great solution in cold season climates with short growing seasons. Some areas in the northern U.S. and Canada have growing seasons of sixty days or less. That makes it hard to grow a lot of crops in the ground. You can’t start your whole garden indoors, either—it’s been tried, but the garden takes up the same amount of space whether it’s outdoors or in your living room.

You can, however, put up a plastic green house over the garden area in the spring and get things going up to a month early, even if you don’t heat it. When it gets warmer, you just collapse your plastic greenhouse and store it away. Then in the fall, when the nights start to get cool, you put it back up over the garden. You can extend a sixty-day season into a 120-day season that way.

Rotating Crops

Another place a plastic green house is particularly useful is when you rotate crops. You can erect the plastic green house over cold sensitive crops and get them going early. Later in the summer, you can remove the green house completely. The next time you use it, you can use it in a different place and rotate your vegetables and flowers, which is better for the soil.

Cooking Compost

This might sound a little weird, but it works. Compost has to be hot to break down into a rich soil additive. During the summer it generates its own heat, especially if you turn it frequently. When it starts to get cold outside, though, the compost doesn’t generate enough heat to keep the process going. In the winter, you can erect your portable plastic green house over the compost bin and keep it composting. That way you’ll have compost ready in the spring, when you move your little plastic green house over the garden and start your lettuce and peas.
